Fighting radicalization to enhance e-strategy for a youth-comprehensive approach towards on-line terrorism

Trainings on social media channels and social activism in Baramulla, J&K

05-01-2021, Baramulla: Members of “Save Youth Save Future” organised the latest event of series of full-day trainings as part of the project “Free 4 Youth: Fighting radicalization to enhance e-strategy for a youth-comprehensive approach towards on-line terrorism”. The trainings were hosted in Dak Banglow Baramulla and despite the very harsh winter conditions, which were the cause of blocked roads and lack of public transport, more than 60 youth from North Kashmir showed up, manifesting great dedication and desire to learn, seek better opportunities and improve.

The event consisted of two main sessions. The first one provided in-depth information about social media channels and social activism. The session offered ideas and explored examples and practical techniques through which people can engage and communicate online. It provided opportunities for individuals to engage positively with the digital domain. The attendees learned about various elements of the communication process, the evolution from traditional media to new media, and the adoption of digital technologies that brought significant changes in the way we communicate. This event also explored the emerging field of social media communication as practitioners can use new tools to communicate with their target groups via social networking.

The second segment of the event consisted of activities that presented the real image of Islam. With the help of two respected Imams, it aimed to manifest how Islam is the religion of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence. It further demonstrated that participating in violent jihad is not the ultimate purpose of a Muslim, or the Muslim community. The event helped to explore the real side of Islam that is opposite to what mainstream or social media show, and is being exploited by terrorist groups. The speakers explained that it is very easy to manipulate Holy Scriptures to achieve disillusioned and violent goals. Thus, they encouraged youth to think critically when the propaganda of terror organisation seems to manipulate Islamic Scripture.

In spite of the snow and blocked roads, the event proved to be very vibrant and interactive as participants were highly enthusiastic to learn more about the discussed topics and defy the harsh winter conditions for the purposes of seeking a better tomorrow.
